Jaywick Sands, CO15 2LF

Help Essex Book Festival and friends in their pledge to make 1000 Peace Cranes, in memory of Sadako Sasaki, a victim of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

Sedako Sasaki, one of the hibakusha, a Japanese term meaning ‘bomb-effected person’, was two years old when the atomic bomb was dropped near her home in Hiroshima in 1945. She is remembered through the story of the 1000 origami cranes she folded before her death, which remains a symbol of the innocent victims of nuclear warfare.

All cranes made so far this March will be exhibited at the Tower, suspended from the walls and ceiling.

Among those who have contributed to the project so far include:

  • Visitors to our Place weekend at Firstsite, Colchester
  • Members of the Origami Society from the University of Essex
  • Members of Essex Children’s University after school clubs
  • Pupils at a high school in Nagasaki, Japan
  • Visitors to Essex Book Festival at the Bunker, who participated in origami workshops run by Silverend Scouts
  • And Wendy Constance, children’s writer and participating author in the festival
