How to Write a Super Story in 3 Easy Steps

Award winning author Catherine Emmett explores how to write a story in 3 easy steps. The workshop will look at what makes a brilliant beginning, a magnificent middle and an excellent ending. Catherine will use her award-winning book, The Pet to explore how the rule of 3 can be used to create super stories!

Catherine will talk through what each part of a story needs and will then work with the children to come up with a collaborative story and will show how using the rule of 3 can help structure a tense and exciting story.

For ages: 7-11

About the book – The Pet

Digby David wants a pet, but not just any pet – it has to be twice as big as Reuben’s guinea pig and even better than Lily Jean’s cat. Digby David’s Daddy does what he’s told, and soon Digby has a guinea pig, which he loves with all his heart… for half a day. Digby demands bigger and better, Daddy’s hair gets greyer and greyer, and when Digby’s dog gets boring too, he insists Daddy buy him… a gorilla!

A hilarious tale with a ‘be careful what you wish for’ message, especially if you wish for a gorilla and don’t look after it properly.

Illustrated by the bestselling illustrator of the Mr Gum books, David Tazzyman. Published by Macmillan.

About the author

Cath grew up in Newcastle and spent her childhood reading books and dreaming about having lots of animals. But when she grew up, she moved to the Big Smoke and spent her time making boring spreadsheets instead.

After advising a group of young girls to find a career that they loved and to follow their dreams, she decided to take her own advice! She packed up her husband and her three young boys, escaped to rural Essex where she started to write picture books. She now spends her days surrounded by words, animals and her noisy family.

Funny, clever and heart-warming, with twisty plots and endearing characters, Cath’s stories feature an original and exciting new voice. She writes in both faultless rhyme that is a joy to read aloud and engaging prose. Both of Catherine’s books have won awards and been shortlisted for numerous others. Sammy Striker and the Football Cup and The Dodo Who Dreamed she could Fly will be out later this year.
