Gaia at Liverpool Cathedral Photo by Gareth Jones 3x2

Chelmsford Cathedral is delighted to be welcoming Gaia to Essex for the first time this October.

Gaia is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring six metres in diameter and created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface, the artwork provides the opportunity to view the planet, floating in three dimensions. It will be suspended, two metres up, giving visitors an opportunity to see the earth as astronauts see it from space and will fill the nave of Chelmsford Cathedral.

Artist Luke Jerram hopes that visitors will be inspired, seeing our planet in a new way and that the installation will give people an opportunity to reflect on its vulnerability.

The Cathedral is inviting people from across the county to come and think about how each of us can play our part in saving our planet for future generations. The three-week event, running from 11th to 30th October, will focus on education and the environment with a range of exciting events already being planned. Gaia will also be free to visit during the day. Especially for half-term, there will be events taking place for families and an opportunity to see Gaia spectacularly lit at night.

Join the team of Volunteers

Chelmsford Cathedral is really excited to be hosting Gaia this October.

In order to make the event a success, they are looking to recruit volunteers to welcome visitors, help manage ticket queues and generally answer any enquiries. You may also be able to help with refreshments or run our shop if this is something you have experience in. Full training will be given; the main requirement is for enthusiasm and a willingness to make people feel welcome.

Visit chelmsfordcathedral.org.uk/gaia for more information about the volunteering opportunities including a letter outlining more details, a role description and an application form.

If you would prefer to complete an application form online, the letter contains a link for you to be able to do this. Otherwise please return your application form to Laura Brayford:  laura.brayford@chelmsfordcathedral.org.uk

Deadline for volunteer applications is 12th August
